Cost-Effectiveness of Distributing Naloxone to Heroin Users for Lay Overdose Reversal
نویسندگان
چکیده
Results of Sensitivity Analysis: Naloxone distribution was costeffective in all deterministic and probabilistic sensitivity and scenario analyses, and it was cost-saving if it resulted in fewer overdoses or emergency medical service activations. In a “worst-case scenario” where overdose was rarely witnessed and naloxone was rarely used, minimally effective, and expensive, the ICER was $14 000. If national drug-related expenditures were applied to heroin users, the ICER was $2429.

Correction: Cost-Effectiveness of Distributing Naloxone to Heroin Users for Lay Overdose Reversal.
BACKGROUND Opioid overdose is a leading cause of accidental death in the United States. OBJECTIVE To estimate the cost-effectiveness of distributing naloxone, an opioid antagonist, to heroin users for use at witnessed overdoses. DESIGN Integrated Markov and decision analytic model using deterministic and probabilistic analyses and incorporating recurrent overdoses and a secondary analysis a...
متن کاملLegal Aspects of Providing Naloxone to Heroin Users in the United States
Administration of naloxone hydrochloride is the standard treatment for heroin overdose. Naloxone is simple to administer, effective and has a very low risk of harm. Prescribing naloxone to heroin users for later use in case of need is a simple, inexpensive harm-reduction measure that has the potential to reduce mortality from heroin overdose. Some U.S. physicians may be discouraged from distrib...
متن کاملNaloxone for administration by peers in cases of heroin overdose.
TO THE EDITOR: We wish to call for the removal of scheduling and legislative barriers in Australia that prevent easy access to naloxone for administration by peers to people suffering from a heroin overdose. Use of illicit opioids, typically heroin, remains the major cause of illicit drug-related mortality in this country, with at least one accidental opioid overdose currently occurring each da...
متن کاملPrescribing naloxone to actively injecting heroin users: a program to reduce heroin overdose deaths.
Heroin overdose deaths have increased alarmingly in Chicago over the past decade. Naloxone, an opioid antagonist with no abuse potential, has been used to reverse opiate overdose in emergency medical settings for decades. We describe here a program to educate opiate users in the prevention of opiate overdose and its reversal with intramuscular naloxone. Participant education and naloxone prescr...
